In the latest episode of The Open Korner, I had the honour of sitting down with Delekazi Mokebe, the first Mosotho woman to lead a commercial bank in Lesotho. Her story is one of grace, grit, and a quiet kind of courage that challenges the norms around women in leadership, not only in Lesotho but across the African continent.
This conversation is more than a career highlight—it’s a masterclass in purpose-driven leadership, embracing failure, and creating space for others to rise.
Ha Tsosane Roots, Global Vision
Mokebe’s journey begins in Ha Tsosane, Maseru, where a police officer father and a teacher mother raised her. The values of discipline, service, and humility were instilled early on and continue to shape her leadership today.
As she reflects on her upbringing, you sense the unshakable foundation it gave her—a blend of rootedness and responsibility that has grounded her even at the highest levels of corporate leadership.
When Failure is a Turning Point
One of the most moving parts of our conversation was her honest account of not qualifying for university after high school. In that moment, many would have given up. But Mokebe saw it as a redirection, not a dead end.
“Failure taught me to pause, reflect, and pivot with purpose. It made me stronger.”
This moment laid the foundation for a mindset that has carried her through boardrooms, leadership transitions, and moments of self-doubt.
Education as Empowerment
With a BCom Finance from Wits, a Master’s in Business Leadership, and executive education in the U.S., Mokebe is a lifelong learner who believes in staying curious and relevant.
Her career wasn’t just about climbing the ladder—it was about aligning decisions with values. Each move was intentional, and every lesson became a stepping stone.
Becoming the First Female CEO
When the opportunity to lead a commercial bank came, Mokebe—like many women—initially hesitated.
“I almost didn’t apply. I thought I needed to tick every single box.”
This story resonated deeply. How often do we, especially as women, hold back from roles we’re more than capable of leading? Mokebe chose to step up, lean in, and disrupt the cycle of hesitation.
Today, she leads not only as a CEO but as a symbol of what’s possible for women in male-dominated spaces.
Leading with Empathy, Not Ego
She leads with a blend of empathy, accountability, and emotional intelligence—traits often labelled “soft,” but in her hands, they are powerful tools of transformation.
She acknowledges the weight of expectation—balancing career, family, and societal norms—but her message is clear:
“We don’t need to lead like men to be effective. Our strength is in our differences.”
Building Legacy, Not Just Titles
Beyond her role, Mokebe is committed to mentorship, representation, and opening doors for young women across Lesotho and beyond.
Her legacy is not just the title of “first,” but the trail she’s blazing for those who come after.
