The Power of Storytelling: My Journey to Becoming a Content Creator

By Tokiso TKay Nthebe

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been drawn to stories — not just hearing them, but telling them. Writing and storytelling were my childhood companions. I spent countless hours scribbling thoughts into journals, drafting essays, and advocating for causes I believed in.

I vividly remember my June 2004 school holidays. I was in Grade 10, passionately working on my essay for a provincial writing competition. Fast forward a few years to my second year at university — I was eagerly launching my first blog, hopeful that someday it would become more than just a hobby.

When I wasn’t writing, I was rehearsing scripts as a TV presenter, acting, or performing. I dreamt of appearing on shows like the now-iconic Top Billing or Top Travel, or writing for a travel magazine. Every episode I watched fueled my hunger — because I could see myself there.

The Dreamer Becomes the Creator

To chase those dreams, I joined public speaking and debating clubs in high school. I enrolled in speech and drama classes and later became part of the Toastmasters Club to sharpen my communication and leadership skills. Every stage, every script, every article was a step toward confidence.

Even though some of those dreams didn’t unfold exactly as I imagined — I never became a Top Billing presenter (sadly!) — the rise of technology and social media reignited my creative spark. The digital age gave birth to a new kind of storyteller: the content creator.

So, What Exactly Is a Content Creator?

content creator is more than someone who posts online. They are storytellers — educators, entertainers, and inspirers. They create content that adds value — whether through information, emotion, or experience — and share it across digital platforms to connect with an audience.

A true content creator builds community and trust. They influence not because of trends, but because of authenticity.

Realising I Was One All Along

Looking back, I realise I’ve always been a content creator — long before I knew the term existed. From blogging to posting travel photos and videos, I was already creating digital stories. But it wasn’t until 2019 that I decided to take content creation seriously — not just as a passion, but as a business.

And what an adventure it has been!

I launched my travel, lifestyle, and adventure YouTube channel, my blog and newsletter at www.tkaynthebe.com, and began collaborating with incredible brands. In 2023, I worked with Alliance Insurance Company on the Ke Lapeng campaign and with Malealea Lodge to create authentic travel and lifestyle content.

Now, I’m preparing to launch a travel podcast and online course to help aspiring creators start, grow, and monetise their content.

The Courage to Start

Like I shared in my blog post “Why It’s Important to Start”, my journey into content creation was far from smooth. I wrestled with self-doubt, procrastination, and the dreaded imposter syndrome. But I started anyway — and that decision changed everything.

Five years later, I’ve built a brand, unlocked opportunities, and learned how to create meaningful, monetisable content. The creator economy is thriving, and there’s room for all of us to build, grow, and earn.

My Advice to New Creators

If you’re thinking about starting, here’s my heartfelt advice:

Have fun with the process.
Content creation is an art form. It’s about curiosity, creativity, and connection. So, create with joy — not pressure.

Start — right where you are.
Don’t wait for perfect lighting, perfect timing, or perfect confidence. Growth happens through the process, not before it.

Define your WHY.
Ask yourself: Why am I doing this? What do I want to achieve? Who am I doing it for?
When the likes are slow and the growth feels stagnant, your why will keep you anchored.

Embrace the slow seasons.
In 2022, I hit burnout. My views plateaued, my motivation faded, and I almost quit. Going back to my why reminded me that consistency and purpose matter more than virality.
