A Luxury Retreat in the Heart of the Maluti Mountains
Every time I explore more of Lesotho, I’m reminded that some of the world’s most extraordinary destinations are still quietly undiscovered.
Tucked high in the mountains of Southern Africa, Lesotho—fondly known as The Mountain Kingdom—offers dramatic landscapes, crisp alpine air, and a sense of stillness that feels increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced world. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t shout for attention, but leaves a lasting impression once you arrive.
On this particular escape, my travel companions and I—affectionately known as Bakhothometsi (meaning the influencers, a playful nod to creators and storytellers)—decided to trade city life for mountains, rivers, and deep rest at one of Lesotho’s most iconic destinations: Maliba Lodge
Why Maliba Lodge?
Located in the Botha-Bothe district, approximately a 2.5-hour drive north of Maseru, Maliba Lodge is Lesotho’s first and only 5-star lodge. It sits deep within the pristine Ts’ehlanyane National Park, one of the country’s most breathtaking protected areas.
Surrounded by rolling peaks, indigenous forests, and crystal-clear rivers, Maliba Lodge offers a rare blend of luxury, tranquillity, and wilderness. For global travellers seeking an off-the-beaten-path African experience—without sacrificing comfort—this is a destination that truly delivers.

Accommodation at Maliba Lodge:
One of the things I appreciate most about Maliba Lodge is its ability to cater to different travel styles and budgets, while maintaining a consistent sense of quality and immersion in nature.
5-Star Mountain Lodge Chalets
Perfect for couples, honeymooners, or solo travellers seeking a secluded, luxurious escape with sweeping mountain views.
3-Star Riverside Self-Catering Lodges
Ideal for families or groups who value space, flexibility, and a slower, more intentional travel experience.
3-Star Riverside Huts (Budget-Friendly)
A great option for cost-conscious travellers who still want to experience the magic of Ts’ehlanyane National Park.
For our stay, we chose the 3-star self-catering riverside lodge, which struck the perfect balance between comfort, affordability, and proximity to nature.

Things to Do at Maliba Lodge
Whether you’re drawn to adventure or simply craving stillness, Maliba Lodge offers experiences that showcase Lesotho at its most authentic.

Well-marked trails lead to waterfalls, mountain viewpoints, and quiet forest paths that invite slow exploration.
Horseback Riding
A guided horseback ride through the national park—a traditional Basotho way of navigating the land.
Cultural Village Tours
Opportunities to visit nearby Basotho villages and learn about local traditions, crafts, and daily life.

A refreshing natural pool surrounded by forest, rock formations, and mountain air.
Wellness & Rest
From in-room massages to unhurried mornings with a book and mountain views, Maliba Lodge encourages deep rest.
Planning Your Trip to Maliba Lodge
As travel content creators—and intentional planners—we aim to explore without excess, balancing experience with financial mindfulness. Maliba Lodge’s self-catering options make this not only possible, but enjoyable.
Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
Expect limited connectivity: There’s no Wi-Fi in the riverside lodges—and honestly, that’s part of the magic. It’s a rare opportunity to truly unplug.
Pack warm layers: Even in summer, mountain temperatures drop significantly at night.
Bring groceries from Maseru: We stocked up before driving north, which made meals simple and cost-effective.
Our Budget Breakdown (Approx. USD)
Here’s a transparent look at what we spent for one night, shared among four people:
| Expense | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|
| Self-catering accommodation (1 night) | $120 |
| Groceries & drinks | $105 |
| Fuel (Maseru ↔ Botha-Bothe) | $30 |
| Ts’ehlanyane National Park entrance fees | $8 |
| Total Trip Cost | $263 |
| Cost per person | ~$66 |
USD amounts are approximate and based on exchange rates at the time of travel.
Our Experience at Maliba Lodge
Maliba Lodge is a true hidden gem.
From the scenic drive into Ts’ehlanyane National Park to waking up to the sound of the river and crisp mountain air, the experience felt grounding and restorative. There’s something deeply special about travelling with friends, sharing home-cooked meals, and having unhurried conversations in a place where time naturally slows down.
It reminded me why escapes like this matter—not just as holidays, but as moments to reconnect with ourselves, each other, and the natural world.
Is Maliba Lodge Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
Whether you’re a luxury traveller, a nature lover, or someone curious about Lesotho as an emerging global destination, Maliba Lodge offers a rare and memorable experience. It’s peaceful, scenic, and deeply rooted in the natural beauty of the Maluti Mountains.
For travellers looking to explore Africa beyond the usual routes, Maliba Lodge is an invitation to experience something quieter, richer, and more intentional.
