Part 2: Style icons to follow in Maseru

Is there a criterion used for saying someone is a style icon?

I think we can all agree that style is subjective, and one must consider many things before identifying someone as a style icon. What we cannot shy away from, however, is that there are individuals who effortlessly show up as authentically and uniquely them, making bold statements with how they dress. As highlighted in Part 1: Style icons to follow in Maseru, style is more about identify, individuality and how the person transcends style by what he/she wears.

In the blog ‘The Dress Fiend’, the author puts it nicely where she writes that “It’s the person that wears the clothes that transcends style. I wear what I want because it makes ME feel good. I don’t conform to what society tells me to be and I sure as heck will wear something even if it isn’t ‘on trend.’ Originality comes from staying true to yourself and with that you become, well, YOU!”

Similarly, the style icons featured in this blog are individuals that do not conform to what society tells them to be, but rather curate outfits that express their individuality and originality. Outfits that make them, THEM!

To kick-start another list of style icons to follow, let us start with Paballo Makatla, a multimedia artist in Lesotho’s creative industry and founder of Raw Creatives. This multi-talented digital creator’s style is an intersection of femineity, masculinity and chic. Paballo can creatively transcend her outfits, like she does her videos, comfortably transitioning from baggy outfits to body-hugging looks, each with a touch of her personality.

A personal favourite is Mookho Monnapula, a scientist and founder of Her Favourite Bar Tender whose style is versatile and graceful. A scientist by week and style icon by the weekend, she brings flair and poise to each outfit, and can sometimes be spotted experimenting with daring and bold colours. It is also how she incorporates accessories and blends her adventurous hairstyles to compliment her outfits.

Thoko Phooko (@mowogey on Instagram) is a freelance model and creative whose style is vintage and traditional. Thoko’s outfits are a blend of ‘skhothane’ vibes and streetwear, yet relatable. It’s Thoko’s warm smile or his stern look that gives each outfit its unique personality. His ability to give character to some of the items he thrifts, lures you to explore your own style and push the boundaries.

Another style icon you should follow is Paballo Mokoqo, a seasoned entrepreneur and founder of Dustbusters Africa and Fluorescent Homes. Personally, I think Paballo’s style epitomises chic, elegance and femineity. She exudes softness, warmth and unwavering confidence in every outfit. She knows how to dress for her body, selecting items that emphasize her beauty and gorgeous smile.

It is how he casually incorporates bright colours and accessories like bucket hats and trendy sunglasses, transforming what would ordinarily be simple into a sophisticated and edgy look that draws you in. It would be remiss of me not to include Phakiso Monethi, also known as  Biggah Sensei Baba on Facebook on my  list of style icons to follow. Her style is old school blended with hippie vibes. Though I do not know her well, she gives off good energy that says she is rough on the edges, but soft inside. The blended style oozing through each outfit she wears tells a story of someone who is comfortable and confident in her own skin.

Lerato Chaoana’s style screams playful, fun, fresh and a dash of edge. This digital creator, university student and brand ambassador, creatively curates her outfits to match her personality and energy, and if her Instagram account (@Chaoana.Lerato) is anything to go by, she does this on a budget. Lerato confidently showcases that you do not need a big budget to style things up. What do you need? Some creativity, captivating hairdos and Chaoana’s energy.

Wrapping up the list, I would like to shine the spotlight on Kuenane Bereng (@kuenane_ong on Instagram), a musician, photographer and artist. For me it’s Kuenane’s avant-garde style, complimented by his versatile hairstyles and captivating piercings. I do not know what inspires his outfits, but I love it! Not only is he multi-talented and creative, but when we speak of icons who defy societal norms and expectations, creatively crafting his own story, Kuenane’s name ranks high.

Fashion changes, but style endures

To conclude this blog, I would like to quote one of the greats, Coco Chanel who wrote, ‘Fashion changes, but style endures’. I believe that  style is not so much about following trends, rather expressing your individuality, uniqueness and originality. The people I featured in this blog and the previous one, authentically tell us who they are, each one inspiring us to find our unique style and express our individuality.
